Bulgarian state wants money back from illegal property swaps

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is demanding back, by letter, from the recipients, the overpayments from exchange deals of private for state-owned land over the 2007-2009 period.

Unlawful state aid for the beneficiaries has been ascertained in 103 out of the 132 swap contracts inspected – a total of 470 estates covering an area of over 2,200 hectares. The amount paid in excess is more than 40 million euro.

As far back as 2099 the European Commission declared the deals inadmissible under state aid rules, demanding that the sums paid in excess be paid back to the Bulgarian states and the deals – frozen by the first GERB party government.
