No consensus in ruling coalition on candidate for new BNB governor

Photo: library

No candidacy for governor of the Bulgarian National Bank - BNB had been submitted to parliament by March 8, which was the deadline. The election of a central bank governor has been postponed once again and a new procedure is to be launched. Parliamentary parties had 20 days to nominate candidates, but no proposals were filed. The ruling coalition have not reached a consensus on a common candidate and negotiations continue.

The 6-year term of the current Governor of the BNB, Dimitar Radev, expired in July 2021. The terms in office of two of the Deputy Governors of the bank- Nina Stoyanova and Kalin Hristov, have also expired.

BNB expects inflation to continue accelerating until the end of the first half of the year, according to the Central Bank's economic review. This is likely to lead to tightening of monetary policy worldwide, the bank added.
