Parliament rejects proposal for volunteer squads amidst fervent debates

After a heated debate in the plenary hall, the parliamentary majority rejected proposals for amendments to the law on the Ministry of Interior, which provided for the creation of voluntary formations attached to the police authorities. The texts were proposed by GERB's coalition partner United Patriots, and were supported by MPs from GERB. The idea was that groups of volunteers should be allowed to assist the police, especially in tackling domestic crime in small towns and villages.
Both the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) have spoken out against the creation of such voluntary formations.
