Bulgarian wheat is waiting in storage

Agricultural production worth more than 17 million euros is not being sold and is waiting in storage in Silistra region due to low purchase prices, BTA reported.

On the one hand, the prices of EU-authorised fertilisers and chemicals are very high, and on the other, uncontrolled imports of cheap agricultural produce from Ukraine are making the Bulgarian harvest unsellable. Since September, the price of wheat has fallen by EUR 50 per tonne and the price of Bulgarian wheat is currently around EUR 250 per tonne, which is significantly below its cost. In order to make room for the new crop, many farmers will have to sell at break-even prices and take out loans to finance the new crop. This will inevitably lead to bankruptcies in the industry among smaller farmers. According to industry representatives, the situation is the same in Romania.
That is why representatives of the sector from both countries are proposing that Ukrainian agricultural products exported under the so-called solidarity corridors should transit through EU Member States without remaining on the European market. This problem has been repeatedly signalled by the Minister for Agriculture, Yavor Gechev, who has called for the problem to be resolved at European level.
